The Shadows That We Carry

Alongside nineteen other authors, I was lucky enough to donate a short story to the charity anthology, The Shadows That We Carry, published by William Beck at Black Cat Reading. My donation, ‘Always By My Side’, is a tale of friendship against spiralling loneliness.

The physical copy of the book came in the mail a couple of days ago, and I was immediately impressed by its appearance. The weight is decent, font choice intelligent, it has elegant margins, and Daniel Lorn’s cover art is haunting.

The anthology is in memory of Matt Mason, an author who died from cancer in 2025. I knew Matt from social media where he created and hosted the group Horror Writers Chat, a vibrant and positive bunch of indie horror writers that still meet weekly on Bluesky to answer questions on their favourite genre. It’s these writers that put together The Shadows That We Carry which is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support UK.

I do hope you will be able to donate and enjoy the book.
